The resort occupies an entire island near Belize and has emerged as a popular vacation spot for people who enjoy fishing, scuba diving or simply relaxing in a tropical environment.

Measuring 15’6” x 40’, the Mirage is a free form, shallow-deep-shallow unit, with a depth of 5’6” in the center and 3’6” on both ends. Resort guests flock to the pool to enjoy water sports, swim laps and relax. While the Mirage is now a fixture at the Turneffe Island Resort, getting it to the remote island required lots of ingenuity and hard work. It was towed over water by barge from Ft. Lauderdale, FL to Belize City, then transported to Turneffe Island in a converted landing craft.

Upon its arrival at the resort, the Mirage was dragged by a tractor over the sand and lowered into an awaiting excavation. A tractor was used because there are no cranes on the island and the cost to bring one would have been prohibitive.

“This was a challenging job but we got it done,” said San Juan President Kirk Sullivan, adding that the resort owner required a ready-made fiberglass pool because the island lacks craftsmen with the ability to build a concrete pool.
